Can Paint Correction Remove Scratches

Some scratches polish out completely. Some never will. The fingernail test tells you which one you are looking at.

Some scratches disappear completely under machine polishing. Others will never come out no matter who works on them. The difference is depth, and you can usually work out which one you have got in about three seconds.

The Fingernail Test

Run your fingernail lightly across the scratch, at right angles to it.

If your nail glides over without catching, the scratch is inside the clear coat. There is almost always enough clear coat above it to level, and correction will remove it.

If your nail catches in it, the scratch has gone through the clear coat. Polishing will soften its edges so it catches the light less, but the mark will still be there. Removing it properly means refinishing the panel.

What Sits Where In Your Paint

Modern car paint is layered: primer on the panel, then base coat which carries the colour, then clear coat on top. The clear coat is typically somewhere around 40 to 50 microns thick, which is roughly half the thickness of a human hair.

Correction only works within that top layer. Everything a polisher can fix lives in the clear coat, and everything below it is a bodyshop job.

What Comes Out Reliably

  • Wash swirls and fine circular marring, which is most of what makes paint look dull
  • Light scratches your fingernail glides over
  • Buffer trails and holograms left by previous poor machine work
  • Oxidation and general haze on older or neglected paint
  • Water spot etching, provided it has not gone too deep

What Does Not

  • Anything through to the colour or the primer
  • Key scratches, which almost always go through
  • Stone chips, which are missing paint rather than damaged paint
  • Cracked or peeling clear coat, which needs refinishing
  • Dents, however shallow

Why It Is Not Just Polished Until It Goes

Every correction stage removes a small, controlled amount of clear coat. That layer does not grow back and it is what protects the colour underneath from UV.

A panel that has been aggressively corrected several times over its life can run short of clear coat, and once it fails there is no polishing it back. That is why proper correction takes the least it needs to get the result rather than chasing every last mark, and why we will tell you when a panel has had enough taken off it already.

Not sure which kind of scratch you are looking at? Do the fingernail test, then send a photo in daylight. We will tell you honestly what will come out and what will not before quoting anything.
